The South African Swimming Tragedy

On Saturday 29 November 1902, Harry Olver and his brother William Wallace Olver were bathing at the dam at South Randfontain Mine, in South Africa when they got out of their depth and into difficulties. Their uncle, James Nott, who like his nephews was a non swimmer, tried to save them but unfortunately he and young Harry were both drowned. William was fortunately rescued by a fellow bather who with others attempted to  save Harry and James without success.
The boys, along with their mother Elizabeth, had been in South Africa for only four months to join their father Harry Olver who held an important position at the mine.
